Brief description of site: The site is a standing boulder about 25 metres upstream of a small bridge over a stream. The paintings are on the right hand side when facing upstream. It is in a pine plantation.

Brief description of site: The site is on a large rock at the south east corner of Mphingwe Hill two thirds of the way up the hill. Above and below the site are near sheer rock faces. Access to the site is easier from the south side. The site has a good outlook to the east and north. The site has good protection for a camp site or habitation. Brief description of art: The art is not very well preserved and has constant water running over it.

Brief description of site: The site is on a large but narrow passage formed where the boulder has split into two. It is on the east side of Mphunzi hill, near its base. The passage area is well protected and shaded by a high overhang, could have been used as a habitation but rather narrow. Outlook into vegetation and wet area in front. One of the earliest recorded sites in Malawi. Excavated in the 1920's but there appear to be no records from that excavation. Brief description of art: Probably the largest number of red finger designs at one site. Too many motifs to describe individually. Mainly circles, concentric circles, sets of parallel vertical lines, vertical sausages with multiple internal vertical divisions, divided circles and stretched circles. Also various more complex linear designs. A single very faded daubed white zoomorph overlies the red designs near the centre of the panel.

Brief description of site: A tall free-standing boulder near the base of Mphunzi hill at its south-east comer. Protected by small lip. Very limited shade or shelter, merely a protected surface. Looking into rocks and trees. Easily accessible. Brief description of art: 2 sets of parallel vertical lines, two large curving lines and various thicker filled oblong shapes. All applied by finger in red.

Brief description of site: The site is on a large outlying boulder on the western side of Mphunzi hill. There are 2 recessed hollows that are sunk into its south face, one is near ground level and the other a few meters up. Both have been painted on with limited shade or shelter with poor outlook, easily accessible. Brief description of art: The art consists of a spread-eagled design, 2 snake-like meanders, 3 filled circles, one circular motif with protrusions at base. All the images are daubed in white in similar state of preservation. There is a daubed spread-eagled design decorated in black dots is under the above and some faint red finger lines are under all these. There are also 2 horizontal red finger applied lines filled with white, overlain by white daubed spread-eagled design. Also a complex motif applied by finger in white.

Brief description of site: A large boulder 100 metres south of MAL-MPH3 at base of Mphunzi hill. Overhang on west side provides limited shade and shelter. Possible small habitation site. Limited outlook, easily accessible. An old inhabitant from a nearby village remembered that this site had been an important local rain shrines at the start of this century. Brief description of art: The images are all faded and damaged by fires. The images are of an extensive sequence containing red vertical finger applied lines overlain by many white daubed spread-eagled designs, all overlain by a large daubed cream colored cow-like zoomorph.

Brief description of site: A rock-face running along the east side of a large boulder directly north of MAL-MPH1. Protected by a small overhang. Site pleasantly shaded due to enormous tree near its centre, otherwise very little protection. Poor view, easily accessible. Brief description of art: A long panel of red motifs, most faded due to limited protection. Originally there were probably more designs that have now been washed out. Site contains the tallest pictograph in Malawi reaching a height of 510cm. Unusual motif the subject matter of
which is much debated (see Juwayeyi 1991a). 2 similar but smaller motifs further along. Other motifs include sets of vertical and horizontal lines, rows of dots, a circle with a single vertical internal division and another with multiple vertical internal divisions. All applied by finger in red.

Brief description of site: A large boulder a third of way up Mphunzi hill near its south-east comer. Bulges out towards top providing protected surface and limited shade. Extensive amount of quartz and pottery debris infront suggests much use. Excellent views to the east over plain to Chigwenembe and beyond. Fairly easily accessible. Brief description of art: Various sets of parallel lines one with a circle at its top, a set of concentric circles with lines radiating externally from the top, various simple designs made up of crossing lines. All applied by finger red. All faint due to washing by rainwater.
