Mwela East X
Site
Brief description of site: A tall boulder that overhangs at one end producing an inset surface moderately well protected. Near the edge of the hill, looking into trees and other rocks. Pictographs visible from a few metres away. Pleasant shaded seating but no shelter. Easily accessible.
Brief description of art: An impressive panel of pictographs surprisingly well preserved in comparison to nearby sites. Central design is a large filled animal with exaggerated sized body, stumpy legs, a long neck but no head. Dewlap suggests that this may be an eland. Rear section has
been eroded. Other outlines can be seen under present shape suggesting that a similar animal has been repainted a few times in the same place. Also partially underneath is different rather hippo-like animal. In the top right comer is another filled design that looks as if it may be the head, trunk and tusks of an elephant (another possibility is that it is an
ostrich). Over and around these brushed animals are multiple crossing rows of dots.

Brief description of site: The site is on a narrow surface where a crevice runs back into a rock. The crevice can be climbed into but is narrow and small. There is a small shelter nearby which could have provided shaded seating and some protection. There is blackening on roof from smoke and this suggests that it has been used. The images are not widely visible. The site looks into trees and is easily accessible.
Brief description of art: The art consists of vertical lines, some of which are joined by multiple horizontal bars. There is also three rows of dots.

Brief description of site: The boulder sits among a group of small rocks. It spreads outwards towards its top providing shade and limited protection on most sides. Like rock at ZAM-MWW115-119 boulder is raised up resting on top of smaller rocks. Rock is rather rough and crumbly and although extensively painted, pictographs have not adhered well to it. Positioning of pictographs means that they would never have been widely visible. Looking into open wet grassland to the south, no view in other directions.
Brief description of art: Extensive application of rows of dots by finger, most horizontal, many parallel. Also sets of vertical parallel lines, a concentric circle and some curved lines all in
dark red applied by finger.

Brief description of art: A few short vertical lines on a boulder to the east of ZAM-MWE12 among other boulders.

Brief description of site: A small (60cm2) surface protected by triangular lip in side of boulder. At edge of hill looking out into trees and towards Insansa west. No shade nor shelter, easily accessible.
Brief description of art: Various vertical rows of dots applied by finger intersected by an horizontal row of small brushed dots. All in red.

Brief description of site: The site is on a small boulder with an indent towards its top providing a 5Ocm2 area of protected surface at chest height. No shade, nor shelter. Facing along hillside into trees, easily accessible.
Brief description of art: The art consists of a single large filled animal design of uncertain species. Almost all motif area depicts the huge rounded body, two stumpy legs can be seen at the back and small tail, front legs seemingly missing and neck ends without head.

Brief description of site: The site is on a tall boulder with a lip near its top providing limited protection to a small area of surface. No shelter, no shade, facing into boulders and trees. Easily accessible.
Brief description of art: The art is nearly 3m above the ground, probably executed from nearby rock stretching. There is 6 horizontal rows of dots applied by finger in red.

Brief description of site: The site is a boulder behind ZAM-MWE41 with a slight upper lip that protects one side. No shelter, no shade, facing into boulders and trees. Easily accessible.
Brief description of art: The art consists of 6 horizontal rows of dots in two sets of three rows. Applied by finger in red.

Brief description of site: The site is in a lip in a boulder that provides a small protected surface at chest height. No shade, nor shelter, looking into centre of hill. Easily accessible but unnoticeable.
Brief description of art: The art consists of a front section of a small filled animal depiction, the rear section has presumably been eroded and the species is uncertain. There are also various faint rows of dots and an horizontal line executed by finger painting in red.

Brief description of site: Large protected surface (5m2) under overhang in boulder. Pleasant shaded seating but little shelter. Looking into scattered rocks and trees. Easily accessible.
Brief description of art: The art consists of extensive rows and arcs of dots, some very fresh in appearance.

Brief description of site: This is the dwelling site of the Mwela spirit. 10m west of ZAM-MWE45. There is pleasant shaded seating but little shelter. Surrounded by low rocks and boulder looking into trees. Easily accessible.
Brief description of art: The Pictograph is by entrance to cavity in which spirit is said to dwell. There is a single design: a vertically stretched circle with single internal division and 3 vertical lines radiating downwards from its base. Applied by finger in red.

Brief description of site: The site is on a boulder which overhangs at its top to provide a 1.5m2 protected surface. No shade nor shelter. The boulder is on the edge of hill facing so as to look along the hill edge. There is a views into rocks and trees. The site is easily accessible.
Brief description of art: The site consists of 3 sets of vertical parallel lines, an arc of dots all applied by finger and two very thin parallel lines executed by brush.
