Brief description of site: The site is a pair of small boulders beside the Lombadzi stream. Both have wide tops but become thin towards the base. The underside therefore provides shade and shelter. It looks into a stream area and is easily accessible. Brief description of art: The art consists of 2 spread-eagled designs on small flat surface daubed in white.
Brief description of site: The site is on a large and prominent boulder with impressive overhang on eastern side. It is situated on plateau area high on the south-east side of Chongoni Mountain. There is 20m2 of shaded and sheltered floor that would make an ideal habitation site. The shelter is known by locals as Panga La Angoni because it is said to have been a hiding place used by the Chewa during 19th century Ngoni raids. The site was excavated by Mgomezulu in 1976 who found evidence of human activity stretching over a period of millennia. It has very arduous access and takes about an hour and a half of brisk walking up a steep slope from Lombadzi stream. The site cannot be seen from base of hill. Brief description of art: The art consists of a huge panel of images that are far too numerous to describe individually (see sketch). White daubed designs predominate. The principal motifs are spread-eagled designs, snake-like meanders, quadrupeds and dots. There is considerable variety in shape and state of preservation among spread-eagled designs, some are decorated in black dots, more recent ones seem to be smaller. 2 unique images off bellied (pregnant?) bipeds. There seem to be two types of quadrupeds: one is crude but realistic with four legs, ears and tails; the other is square bodied with stick legs, or no legs, triangular head and stick tail (probably nyau figures). The latter are the most recent designs to be painted at the site. Under the daubed white motifs are traces of red motifs applied by finger. These are mostly sets of parallel lines.
Brief description of site: The site is on a group of large boulders set into the hillside on the same high plateau area as MAL-CGN25. There are extensive overhangs on a number of boulders that meet to provide a huge sheltered area (60m2+) that is hidden from view. The site would have made an excellent habitation site or a shelter/hiding place for a large group of people. The site has equally arduous access as MAL-CGN25. The entrance to shelter has an impressive view over the hills to the east. Brief description of art: The art consists of extensive paintwork on a number of adjacent surfaces of which much of it is well preserved. All the images were applied by finger in red. The motifs include: concentric circles, sets of parallel vertical and horizontal lines, half circles open at top with single and multiple internal divisions, a stretched circle with internal grid, and a few unique complex designs composed of joined curved lines. The remarkable variety in size and appearance of the motifs suggests many artists. The varied state of preservation is suggestive of a long sequence.
Brief description of site: A boulder leaning to the south on a steep middle slope of Chongoni Mountain southeast side. Overhang provides 10m2 of shade and protection. Perennial stream runs past the south corner of the boulder. Could have made a small habitation site, pottery scatter on floor suggests shelter has been used. Access very arduous involving a long scramble up steep vegetated slopes. Brief description of art: The art consists of 2 large daubed motifs in white: one a spread-eagled design, other an unusual design resembling the Chewa chitopoli (tribal marking). There are also many images applied by finger in red. The motifs include: sets of parallel vertical and horizontal lines, a concentric circle, a circle with externally radiating lines, 2 half circles open at top with single vertical internal division, another similar but open at base, 2 half circles open at top with multiple vertical internal divisions, a vertically stretched circle with two curving vertical internal divisions. Some parallel lines have a brown fill in between. The variations in shade of red pigment suggest work of many separate artists.
Brief description of site: A small boulder near the southern end of Chongoni mountain, at its base. Boulder leans to east providing two small sheltered areas, too small to inhabit but pleasant for shaded seating. Boulder sits among trees and is hard to see, view rather obscured. Brief description of art: A row of 4 vertical sausage shapes with regular horizontal internal divisions. 2 sets of parallel vertical lines, a circle with single internal horizontal division, a half circle open at top with single internal vertical division, two half circles open at base one inside the other, various larger filled circles. All applied by finger in red. On a small corner surface is a set of parallel lines partially enclosed by a curving line, applied by finger in white.
Brief description of site: On a small leaning boulder just the other side of the Linthipe river from Chongoni mountain at plains level. Sitting amongst other boulders some of which provide shade and limited shelter. Painted boulder merely a protected rock surface. Easy access, no view. Brief description of art: A set of parallel diagonal lines, applied by finger in red.
Brief description of site: A boulder on plains level at the edge of the western side of Chongoni mountain. Top bulges out on western side to provide protection for a sizeable surface, limited shade but little shelter. Not suited for habitation. Easily accessible, looking into trees. Brief description of art: All much blackened by fire lit near base of boulder. Motifs include various spread-eagled designs, all in white, some daubed, some applied by finger. Most of those applied by finger are smaller and are arranged around the others suggesting a later date. Also white daubed snake-like meander decorated with black dots. 2 unusual motifs composed of many squashed circles attached together to form a single design, applied by finger in white (compare with Sanchira 1). A few rows of red dots, applied by finger, can be seen, partially overlain by the white designs.
Brief description of site: Large boulder with a substantial overhang on its north-west side. Situated on the lower western slopes of Chongoni mountain directly below DE42. Excellently shaded and sheltered, ideal for habitation. Excavated in 1976 by G.Mgomezulu where material was found suggesting extensive use over a number of millennia. Looking into trees, surprisingly hard to find. Brief description of art: 3 small spread-eagled designs, and one quadruped all daubed in white. Quadruped decorated with black dots. A filled white zoomorpic design with no legs (nyau - chimkoko?). 2 white outline complex box designs with external attachments (probably nyau animal characters). A red and white dotted design (said by Mgomezulu 1978: 347 to be nyau - musungu). Other faint traces in white. 2 outline zoomorphs in black charcoal (nyaukasiyamaliro & mdondo). Also a swirling line applied by finger in red, partially hidden behind boulder, may have been painted before boulder fell.
Brief description of site: A large boulder on the lower slopes of Chongoni mountain south-east side above DE55. Overhang provides shaded seating but little shelter. Easily accessible; view into trees. Brief description of art: Surface open to washing by rain-water, all pictographs very faded. Only a few traces of red lines survive. Surface may originally have been more widely painted.
