Site
Brief description of site: A very large shelter (40m2) recessed into a rock-face high on the north-east side of Kalambo hill. Well shaded and protected, would have made an excellent habitation site. Fine views over valley to north and east, an excellent observation point. Walking up fromvalley the access is life threateningly arduous, a half hour continuous scramble up a not far off vertical vegetated slope. Access was not attempted from south-east along hillside, this may be more acceptable.
Brief description of art: Extensive area of scattered pictographs. Rock is flaking in areas and so sections are now bare. Motifs include: an outline schematised zoomorph drawn in charcoal (nyau - kasiyamaliro). A few daubed white motifs including: a short snake (probably nyaunsato),
a horizontal square design with various appendages (possibly nyau - ng'ombe) and an area of short simple biped designs (many of which resemble nyau face mask characters). Also extensive red pictographs applied by finger, motifs include: many sets of parallel
vertical lines, a few circles, a few circles with multiple vertical internal divisions, a circle with externally radiating lines, a few sets of dots and various filled oblong designs. Some red designs are decorated in tiny white dots, one filled oblong has a covering set of finely brushed parallel white lines.
