Site
Brief description of site: A short boulder with a flat top and surfaces cutting inwards towards a narrow base. Shaded seating provided by overhang and limited protection. Again near edge of hill with fine views south. Arduous but simple access.
Brief description of art: A circle with externally radiating lines and various lines of dots. All applied by finger in red.
Lwimbo VIII
Site
Brief description of site: A boulder lying a few metres to the west of LW18. Also on top of the hill but set further back among other rocks. A small protected surface positioned above a low shelter. Too far from edge of hill to have good view, looking into trees and rocks. Arduous but
simple access.
Brief description of art: 2 filled animal depictions, both almost identical executed by brush. Style of depiction is relatively naturalistic and it is clear that they are antelope. Shape of horns is
suggestive of sable. Both are in a stooping posture.
Lwimbo VII
Site
Brief description of site: A large boulder at the top of the hill with a flat top, cutting in deeply on most sides towards a narrow base. Under surfaces are small and ledged. Protected underside provides pleasant shaded seating but is not suited to habitation. Extensive view (perhaps 30km) over the steep edge of the hill looking east and south. Arduous but simple access.
Brief description of art: Many and important pictographs in separated groups on 4 different ledges. On the bottom ledge is a large bellied, stooping, filled animal depiction with stick-like legs. Species of animal is uncertain. Right of this are five people arm in arm. Some are clearly men but none have anything in the way of personal adornments. At end of line of people is a similar figure but higher up, appearing to be somersaulting, human in character but with an animal-like head. All are bushed and in similar pigment. Second ledge has two similar large bellied, filled animal depictions. Each has carefully drawn head which is unusual for Kasama animals. Despite this the exact species is unclear; one has a dewlap and so may be an eland. Unfortunately this panel is rather worn. It is clear that there are other designs around the two animals but they are hard to discern. Some look like sections of small animals. All are executed by brush in similar red pigment. On the third ledge is another filled animal depiction very similar to those on the second ledge. Within this depiction, the form of another smaller animal can be made out in a lighter red which must underlie it. This panel is also worn. To the right are a number of traces, two of which almost certainly were animals. The others are too unclear to allow useful speculation. All are executed by brush in
red. The final ledge contains 2 odd animal depictions with squat rounded bodies and the front section of two similar but partially destroyed animals. All 4 give the impression of being by the same hand. All are brushed and in red.
Lwimbo VI
Site
Brief description of art: 2 complete animal depictions and the rear section of 2 others. The central animal is executed in outline and is unusual in having quite a detailed head. Head looks like that of a crocodile but rest of body quite fat and rather unlike that of a crocodile. Above is more
faint animal also in outline. This animal is simple and unusually square, species uncertain but probably an antelope. Very different in style and pigment to crocodile(?). It is hard to judge much from the two rear sections of animals, both are also different in style. The impression is that the 4 animal are the work of 4 different hands probably at different times.
All applied by brush. There are also a few very faint short lines applied by finger.
Lwimbo V
Site
Brief description of art: A few short vertical lines applied by finger in red.
Lwimbo IX
Site
Brief description of site: A boulder standing at edge of hill, similar in all aspect to LW18, except that it has smaller surfaces.
Brief description of art: A few dots and short vertical lines applied by finger in red.
Lwimbo IV
Site
Brief description of art: A complex panel of pictographs. The central section is heavily overlaid. The base design appears to be a filled blob in the shape of an animal body but with no remaining external features. Above this is a much larger faint filled animal design of which only the front
section remains. The head and horns of this animal can be clearly discerned. Above this are two vertical lines applied by finger and two rows of dots. Above all of this is a fairly sharp small animal partially filled. The front section of the unfilled part of the body is decorated with multiple vertical lines. The species of the animal is uncertain. Its is realistically proportioned and its style of depiction is unique. Other motifs on the surface include: 2 more animal depictions, one in outline, one partially filled. Outline animal is in a stooping posture. Partially filled animal was executed in violet but part of design has been transformed into white by water staining. All the animal designs are in differing styles suggestive of different hands. There is also a unique outline bird design, its body is a single
line, it has 2 stick legs and a head. The exact species is uncertain but it clearly depicts one
of the tall grassland birds species. All these designs are brushed. A few finger applied motifs occur lower down comprised of the usual vertical parallel lines, rows of dots and vertical lines.
