Conservation action taken: Conservation
Dust is a major problem in the shelter. Dust settles on the rock face and bonds with mineral salts seeping through the rock. In painted shelters such as this one, the bonded dust obscures paintings and is very difficult to remove. Livestock go into the shelter. They stir up dust and rub against the rock wall, damaging paintings. There is some scratched graffiti in the left hand side of the shelter.
Recommendations
To prevent future conservation problems, it is recommended that the following measures be put in place:
Strangers should only visit the site with the permission of, and accompanied by, the farm owners.
Large groups of people should not be taken to the site; they will create excessive dust that will settle on and obscure the paintings.
Livestock should be prevented from entering the shelter as they may cause serious damage to the paintings. The erection of any physical infrastructure, such as a fence, may require a permit from the relevant heritage agency.
Visitors and farm workers should be informed about the importance of the site and the problem of graffiti.
Conservation needed: yes

How to find the site: On the N6 between Johannesburg and Queenstown. About 4km from the bottom of the Renhoek pass, turn right at the signs for Hazelmere B&B. The sites are on the mountain behind the farmhouse. Walk up the central drainage. Site 1is about half way up in the krans line to the east of the drainage.
