Brief description of site: The Shelter is at the base of a large granite outcrop. The shelter is long about 16m wide, relatively shallow with a south westerly outlook, very close to the village fields. Brief description of art: Red finger painted motif of an animal form. A single image occupying probably 1 fifth of the whole panel surface.
Brief description of site: Small open shelter on a small granite outcrop very near village cultivated fields, but relatively far from the village. The shelter is 2.4m wide with a south west outlook towards OTA1. Brief description of art: Circular motif in red monochrome pigment. Appears finger painted. Other images have faded a bit, but there are very faint traces.
Brief description of site: The site is on a large boulder on the east side of a small hill north of Dedza Mountain. At its centre is recess which the local village used to use the site as a 'bank' (hence the name, John = Johannesburg, the city of 'wealth'). Painted surface is to the right of the recess. The site has pleasantly shaded seating but no shelter and good views to the east. The site is fairly easily accessible. Brief description of art: The art consists of 5 parallel vertical lines, applied by finger in red.
Brief description of site: The site is on a large rock towards the top of the most northerly hill and has little protection. There were probably more paintings but now destroyed. Farther Billanger? has checked all the rocks on the three hills and has found no other paintings. Brief description of art: The paintings are on a small protected area facing south at the NE end of a large rock face. Most of the rock face is too weathered for paint.
Brief description of site: An enormous potato shaped rock (hence name). This site is on a boulder just below the main rock. Leaning slightly so as to protect one face. Shade but no shelter, fine views to the east. Easily accessible. Brief description of art: Termites have built up deposits against the painted surface and may have covered some designs. Motifs that remain include 3 concentric circles, a circle with externally radiating lines, a grid of dots, a group of bunched circles, a half circle open at top with single vertical division and many small filled circles and oblongs. All faint, applied by finger in red.
Brief description of site: The site's North West face is vertical and slightly protected. No shade or shelter View limited by vegetation. Easily accessible. Brief description of art: Surface much washed and flaking. A few red designs survive including 3 circles with externally radiating lines and a few vertical lines. All applied by finger in red.
Brief description of site: Small recess provides limited shade and shelter. Fires have been lit in recess but too small to be used as habitation. Painted surface to the right of recess. Limited outlook directly into Dedza Mountain. Easily accessible. Brief description of art: Surface extensively washed by water, damaged by fires and flaking. Only a few damaged traces remain including vertical lines, a part of a circle and part of a row of dots.
Brief description of art: The art is on an open site all in red. There is an outline of a zoomorph, a rectangle filled with finger dots. There is also a grid and a circle as well as a central dot.
Brief description of site: The site is on a small recess at the base of a boulder on the eastern side of a small Sanchira hill. It is a pleasant site allowing shaded and sheltered seating but too small for habitation. There are fair views over the plain to east. It is easily accessible. Brief description of art: The art consists of 2 sets of parallel vertical lines applied by finger in red. Also a unique complex red and white design having the appearance of various circles that have been squashed together. Outline in red, filled with faint white.
Brief description of site: The site is on a large rock shelter (40m2) near the top of Sanjika Hill. Well shaded and protected would make an ideal habitation site. Looking into rocks and trees but on a rock immediately above there are fine views in all directions. Arduous access from south but fairly easy from north. Brief description of art: At far right hand end of shelter; surprisingly there are no pictographs on shelter wall itself it is quite rough and seems to have been avoided. Panel used is vertical smooth and well protected. Pictographs include 2 sets of parallel lines one horizontal, the other vertical, which partially overlap. 2 half circles open at top, one with 2 internal divisions, the other 4. Both are crossed by diagonal lines. At top is a circle with internal divisions radiating from the centre, the upper 3 of which 'break out' of the circle. This is one of the few instances of internal divisions crossing an external form. All applied by finger in red.
