        Background of the Recorder

        Bill Barnes was born on 9 September of 1927 in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Bill was the son of the famous ranger Phil Barnes, who worked at Giant's castles in the 1900s. He worked at Giant's Castle as a ranger for 36 years. Bill spent almost his entire life at Giant's Castle. He began his working career as a ranger here in 1946. After a spell at Royal Natal Park running a trout hatchery he returned to Giant's Castle as a warden in 1956. In his work as a ranger, Bill had the opportunity to visit and photograph rock art in the area. He was also instrumental in the protection of the latter. Bill Barnes died in May of 2003.
