Background of the Recorder:Mr Sentker was born on the 29 January 1915 in Osnabruck, Lower Saxony, Germany. He attained his BA degree in 1953 at the University of Pretoria and subsequently completed his Honours degree in Anthropology and African Languages after which he was appointed as Junior Lecturer in African Languages. During his tenure he was also actively involved in the 1953-4 excavations at Mapungubwe, being responsible for work on the Southern Terrace.
In 1957 he joined the Department of Anthropology at the University of South Africa where he almost single-handedly established the Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology. In 1958 he embarked on a long-term project on a farm in the Badplaas District in Mpumalanga. These sites yielded rich deposits and various panels of San rock art. Various reports and detailed documentation testify to this endeavour.
Two shelters were found on the farm, namely HKLP I and HKLP V. Preliminary investigations in 1957 confirmed that both shelters have Stone Age deposits. In addition, extensive rock art panels were recorded at HKLP I. During subsequent field work seasons excavations were conducted at both shelters. As part of this project Mr Sentker also traced the rock art panels at HKLP I.
Sentker died on 10 November 1983 due to complications associated with histoplasmosis (cave disease), which he contracted in the 1960s.
