Note

Background of the Recorder:Sapienza University of Rome was established as La Spienza in 1303, as an ecclesiastical Studium by Pope Boniface VIII, and is currently one of the largest universities in Rome.

In 1431 Pope Eugene IV recognized on a decree that the studium, should include the four faculties, mainly the faculty of Law, Medicine, Philosophy and Theology. He introduced a new tax on wine, so he could raise funds for the University. The money accrued from the taxes, was used to purchase a palace which later became the Saint Yves church.

In 1527 the stadium was closed due to the sack of Rome and all of the professors dispersed, and others may have been killed. It was only in 1534, after the Pope Paul III ascension to his pontificate that the university was restored.

In 1650s the university became known as Sapienza, meaning wisdom, title it retains still today.

In 1870 La Sapienza ceased to be a papal university and became the University of the Rome. Since 1935 Sapienza University of Rome has been under the control of the Italian Government.
